The study of global affairs examines interactions between states, non-state actors, and regions worldwide. Topics include diplomacy, trade, conflict resolution, and human rights. Global affairs draws on methods and insights from all of the social sciences, most of the humanities, and the natural and physical sciences.
As the world becomes increasingly interdependent, the emergence of new nations and the rise of international organizations are important trends in global affairs. During decolonization, newly independent states sought recognition and legitimacy in the global arena while navigating complex relationships with established powers. The Cold War further influenced global affairs as countries aligned with the United States or Soviet Union for support and alliance.
Global affairs is a broad discipline with many career paths, including international relations, peace studies, development, and humanitarian aid. As a global citizen, you should have an awareness of the challenges facing our planet and be able to analyze and debate global issues.
Our global scholars work with leading experts in fields like development, international law and governance, conflict resolution, economics, and environmental sustainability to create a rounded understanding of the complex problems that face our world. Students apply to the major in the fall of their sophomore year and are selected through a competitive process. The application process is posted on the Jackson School website and circulated through residential college deans’ offices.
In this capstone course, small groups of global affairs seniors will collaborate to design and execute a policy task force. They will use their academic training to address a real-world problem in the areas of sustainable development, resource security, and global justice.
