Global affairs is the study of world trends and issues that transcend national boundaries, ranging from economic development to international conflict. As the world becomes more interdependent, leaders in business, government, and nongovernmental organizations require specialized knowledge of global trends to address challenges from abroad and promote peace and prosperity across the globe.
The field of global studies is interdisciplinary and incorporates the study of political science, history, geography, economics, and sociology to develop a sophisticated understanding of global issues including terrorism, human rights, poverty, famine, and world trade. In addition to core courses in this major, students have the opportunity to focus on a specific region or topic of interest through one of our thematic concentrations, which can be combined with a minor.
A degree in global affairs offers a wide range of career options. You can work in the private sector for companies that have a worldwide presence, or work as an adviser to international government and nongovernmental agencies. You can also choose to work in the nonprofit world, where you can find opportunities with foundations, research institutions, public interest groups, and other NGOs.
Sacred Heart students are encouraged to take advantage of study abroad opportunities and internships in order to gain hands-on experience working on global issues. Up to two summer term or semester courses taken at another institution may, with DUS approval, count toward the major requirements. Students who complete a senior project in the form of a Capstone, or as a senior essay in a seminar of their choosing, will satisfy the required senior requirement for this major.
